A stylish new hotel in a historic Manhattan building, a short walk from the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal and the Theater District

When Manhattan’s 29 East 29th Street first opened its doors as Martha Washington Hotel, it was to a very specific set of sophisticated women in early-20th-century society. Today, all are welcome here at this Renaissance Revival building, but it still has an air of elegance and exclusivity. The Manhattan outpost of a hotel chain whose L.A. location was Travel + Leisure’s number-one hotel in that city in 2016, it’s big on the vintage style and boutique vibes, and no wonder – heading it up is leading lifestyle hospitality company, the prestigious entertainment group behind SLS Hotels, Miami’s The Raleigh and celeb-favored restaurants and lounges throughout the states, including Katsuya, The Bazaar by José Andrés, Hyde Lounge and Cleo.

Chief among the high-end offerings here may be Marta. Not content to be your run-of-the-mill hotel eatery, this full-service restaurant received its concept and menu from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. There’s also Bar Marta, the sleek lobby lounge where bartenders mix craft cocktails and pour craft beer, while serving Marta’s menu. Your accommodation gets its own glamorous touch, spruced up with playful Victorian art, but you might not want to spend too much time here. One thing that hasn’t changed at all since the early 1900s is that the streets outside – formerly the capital of the New York music-publishing industry known as Tin Pan Alley – are abuzz with activity, and within a half-hour walk of both Times Square and Central Park.

Dining

Heard of Danny Meyer? He’s the culinary visionary behind not only the Museum of Modern Art’s eateries and the legendary Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe, but a certain Manhattan-born global chain called Shake Shack – and his Union Square Hospitality Group is the force behind Marta, the hotel's ground-floor restaurant. Just as its name plays on that of the hotel, this Roman-inspired pizzeria has a playful spirit, serving its fire-kissed thin-crusts, meat, fish and vegetable dishes in a lively breakfast, lunch and dinner setting.

Bar Marta’s looks to a different time and place for inspiration: its building’s early days, in the early 1900s. Hit up this lobby bar and lounge for an after-hours cocktail or craft beer, as well as any item from the Marta menu.

Location

The hotel is set in an increasingly buzzed-about Midtown neighborhood that’s known as NoMad (short for "North of Madison"). This area is north of that park and south of the Empire State Building, and if you stay here, you can comfortably walk to both. Walk a little farther – a little less than a mile – to get to Times Square, or just hop on the nearby N or R train to get there in fifteen minutes, tops. For that matter, these subway lines and others in the area will take you wherever else you want to go, uptown, downtown, east or west.
