A nine-night tour of Peru’s most famous sights, plus some off the beaten path, with select meals and more

From picturesque peaks and verdant valleys to steamy cityscapes, there’s so much to explore and experience in beautiful Peru. Beginning in Lima, the country’s capital, and culminating in a bucket-list expedition to Machu Picchu, this tour will take you on a journey to fascinating cities and unforgettable ruins. To ensure your comfort, most breakfasts and several other meals will be included, plus nine nights at four hotels and one family home, a round-trip expedition train and more.

You’ll travel worry free as you traverse the country, courtesy of English-speaking tour guides from the South American travel specialists at Kaypi Perù Tours. Apart from the train ride, you'll travel in style and comfort – in a modern motor coach. But what makes this tour a true standout are the fantastic mix of sights, including the less-traveled islands of Taquile, Amantani and Uros. The Andes region is the highest in the Americas, and, thanks to these skyscraping altitudes, you’ll have to pinch yourself to remember this sweeping journey isn’t just a vivid dream – it’s really happening.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Peru and receive a transfer from the airport to your Lima hotel, with the rest of the day yours to spend as you please.

Day 2: Following breakfast, depart for a Lima city tour. Visit the Historic Center, the Plaza Mayor, the grand cathedral, the Church of San Francisco and more. Afternoon is again free to spend as you wish.

Day 3: Fly to Juliaca, or Puno, where you’ll again meet a tour rep and transfer to the hotel for some down time.

Day 4: In the early morning, take a motorboat ride to the beautiful, tiny Uros reed islands, home to the Uros people. Sail onward to Amantani Island, with the option to trek up a mountain to the Temples of the Pachamama and Pachatata and behold traditional island customs. Explore natural and archaeological sites, such as a temple on the world’s highest navigable lake, before meeting your host family, who will cook you delicious meals and make you feel welcome in this special corner of Peru. Expect a community party, with dancing and traditional outfits for you to wear.

Day 5: Take breakfast early, with your host family, and then accompany them to the harbor so you can bid farewell. Return to Puno, with a stop at nearby Taquile Island to tour ruins and meet one of its families, who will show you the beautiful textiles and teach you about local agriculture.

Day 6: Take a trip to Cusco’s bus station for a four-stop tour. You’ll see Pukara, the most important and oldest ceremonial center; La Raya, the highest point in the Altiplano and Cusco and Puno’s halfway point; the dramatic Wiracocha God Temple; and the marvelous Andahuaylillas chapel. A buffet-style lunch will be served in Sicuani, and you’ll be picked up at 5pm by a tour rep.

Day 7: Spend the day exploring Cusco, the capital of the Incas, on your own.

Day 8: Transfer to the train station for a three-and-a-half-hour trip to Aguas Calientes. The rest of the day is all yours, to bathe in the hot springs or otherwise do as you please.

Day 9: Today is Machu Picchu day. Wake bright and early to reach the ruins by sunrise and then to take a three-hour walking tour. After that, you’ll have some free time to keep wandering and behold the sights on your own. Return to Aguas Calientes to get your train ticket from your guide and eat lunch, and then ride back to Cusco. Note that it’s best to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before your bus and train rides.

Day 10: Say farewell to Peru, and head to the airport for your flight home.
